During her research, my wife, Edina Grész, came across an article from 1930 featuring letters smuggled out of the Soviet Union. These letters lay bare the godless, frenzied, demonic reality of communism—as though unleashed from the depths of hell. They reveal what those who proclaimed themselves benefactors of the people, champions of justice, and fighters for equality actually did in the name of creating a “more just society.” (Let us be under no illusion: the demons of a century ago still walk among us today.)
Letter 1:
“In Moscow, all churches have been closed, and priests and preachers have been imprisoned or shot dead. One Mennonite preacher has lost his mind. Many people are committing suicide. A Greek Catholic priest was taken away and imprisoned, while his wife and their three children were thrown into the street in −36°C (-33F) weather without warm clothing. Seeing a hole in the river ice, the unfortunate woman threw her children through it into the river and then jumped in after them. Similar incidents occur constantly. These are outbursts of despair to which only utter destitution and the fear of terrible suffering could drive people. It is almost incomprehensible that, although the world hears of this, it continues calmly with its daily life, while the League of Human Rights, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the International Peace League, and the League of Nations do nothing to help these unfortunate, defenseless people.”
Letter 2:
“This is my soul’s final attempt, its final cry, and I fear that even this will cost me my life. If you can, imagine life here: priests and preachers have either been imprisoned or exiled. Throughout the villages, terror is the means of control. It is rumored that in the coming days everyone will be forced to join the communists, and those who refuse will face imprisonment, exile, or death. Many people are losing their minds. Some kill their children—especially their daughters—before the communists can take them away. Books with religious or moral content are burned. Wild orgies are held. Who has ever witnessed anything like this? If you are able to help, do so immediately, because only destruction and annihilation remain ahead of us. If you do not want every religion to be abolished and those who practice religion to be exterminated, help us! Send this report throughout the whole world. Help us, help us—but quickly!”
Letter 3:
“Help us! We are dying in tears! Our hair is turning gray with grief, and we are nearing the end. It is as though a bottomless abyss has opened around us. Everything earthly is disappearing, and the Grim Reaper stands at the edge of the abyss. Wringing of hands, lamentations, sighs, sobbing, and screams can be heard in every village. All we hear is: ‘They must perish—let them perish!’ This is nothing less than systematic extermination. There is no medicine, no help! Save our souls!…”
The demonic spirit of communism, having slaughtered hundreds of millions of souls and laid nations to waste, still hovers among us. It seeks to seize every sphere of life and infect every soul, arm in arm with a ruthless demon unleashed from another circle of hell: Islamist extremism, which preaches death and raises the extermination of unbelievers as its banner.
