The Leader We Long For

He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,

or make it heard in the street;

a bruised reed he will not break,

and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;

he will faithfully bring forth justice.

He will not grow faint or be discouraged

till he has established justice in the earth

Isaiah 42:2–4

A Leader in Whom God Delights and Whom He Supports

Commissioned Servant – He sees himself as God’s servant. A servant who carries out his Master’s command, works by his Master’s commission, seeks only his Master’s pleasure, and gives account to Him alone. He does not see himself primarily as a leader, but as a servant entrusted with responsibility.

Rejecting Self-Promotion – His goal is not recognition, popularity, or glory, but faithfulness and the complete fulfillment of the task entrusted to him. He does not shout or clamor; he does not promote himself in the streets. He does not chase recognition, publicity, or praise. He has no need for self-promotion, loud marketing, or public self-exaltation. It is enough for him that God delights in him. He does not seek popularity, but simply carries out his task—quietly doing what he is called to do.

Compassionate toward the Weak – He helps, heals, and lifts up the weak, the barely surviving, the broken. He does not trample the weak, but protects, strengthens and supports them.

Proclaimer of Justice – He proclaims and represents truth regardless of whose interests or feelings it may offend.

Persevering in Suffering – The hardships, struggles, attacks, isolation, and loneliness that arise from proclaiming the truth do not break him, intimidate him, or cause him to abandon his calling. Because he does not depend on human opinion, emotions, or interests, but seeks God’s pleasure alone, he is able to rise above the reactions and attacks he must endure for the sake of the truth.

We long for and sorely lacking such leaders - both in the world and in the church.
